Born from experience. Built for opportunity.
Top of the Class grew from a proven commitment to helping students who needed more support receive more opportunity. Today, that foundation becomes a broader platform built around the student.
Our Origin
It was born from experience.
Years ago, the Central Florida Urban League launched a Free Reading Program with a straightforward belief: when a child is struggling academically, the answer should not be to lower expectations. The answer should be to surround that child with the instruction, resources, and support necessary to succeed.
The program focused on elementary students in Grades 3–5 who were struggling in reading. It created additional learning time after school and on Saturdays, compensated teachers for providing targeted tutoring, and brought schools and community partners together around a common objective: helping students become stronger readers.
When students need more support, opportunity should move toward them.
A Shared Commitment
The original reading initiative brought together the Central Florida Urban League, Orange County Public Schools, Step Up For Students, and the Florida Department of Education around a simple premise: identify the need, mobilize resources, empower educators, and deliver support where students learn.
The Evolution
That early work revealed something larger: academic potential is everywhere. Opportunity is not.
What We Believe
Too often, what is missing is access: access to high-quality instruction, individualized support, additional learning time, and adults empowered with the resources to intervene.
Top of the Class exists to close that opportunity gap by organizing support around the student rather than asking the student to navigate a fragmented system alone.
“What happens when we stop allowing a child’s circumstances to determine their academic future?”
The Top of the Class Model
Build the ecosystem around the student and make opportunity easier to reach.
Reach students and families where they are and identify where additional support can change the trajectory.
Look beyond labels and identify the academic, family, and opportunity barriers standing between a student and success.
Align educators, community organizations, philanthropy, public resources, and learning providers around the student.
Turn resources into tangible access to instruction, experiences, and educational pathways that fit the student.
Help students move from intervention to momentum—building confidence, readiness, and a larger vision for what is possible.
